Each caplet contains 500 mg Sucralfate.
Sucralfate is an aluminium salt sucrose sulfate which acts locally in the GI tract and is virtually unabsorbed. It produces an
adherent and cytoprotective barrier at the ulcer site that resists degradation by acid and pepsin.
Laboratory and clinical studies indicate that sucralfate may promoted the healing of peptic ulcers in 3 ways :
Forming a chemical complex that binds to the ulcer site to establish a protective barrier.
Directly inhibits the action of acid, pepsin and bile.
Blocking the diffusion of gastric acid through the barrier.
Studies indicate that sucralfate remains in the GI tract for extended period s, prolonging the therapeutic actions of the drug.
Furthermore. It is minimally absorbed from Gi tract which results in insignificant systemic side effects.
Short-term treatment (up to 8 weeks) of gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer and chronic gastritis.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION :
The recommended adult oral dosage is 1 g 4 times a day in an empty stomach (1 hour before meal and at bed time ).
]Antacids may be taken as needed for the relief of pain but not be taken within ½ hour before or after Ulcumaag is
Treatment should be continued for 4-8 weeks unless healing has been demonstrated by X-ray or endoscopic examination.
There is no experience in humans with over dosage. However, acute oral toxicity studies in animal, using doses up to 12 g/kg
body weight, were not lethal.
Patients known hypersensitive to sucralfate.
Use in pregnancy & lactation : There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Therefore, this drug
should only be used during pregnancy if clearly needed.
Be careful when administering this drug to lactating women and to patients with chronic renal insufficiency.
Use in children : Safety and effectiveness in children have not been established.
ADVERE REACTIONS :
Adverse reactions to sucralfate were minor and rarely led to the discontinuation of the drug . Constipation was the most
Other adverse effects were diarrhea, nausea, gastric discomfort, pruritus, rash, dizziness, sleepiness, vertigo, back pain and
