Each caplet contains 20 mg and 40 mg Famotidine.
Famotidine is a histamine H2-antagonist receptor of the thiazole family. It inhibits basal and nocturnal gastric acid secretion
through competitive inhibition against histamine H2-receptor on the parietal cells.
Famotidine also inhibits gastric acid secretion stimulated by food and pentagastrin. After oral administration, peak plasma
level occurs within 1-3 hours, with duration of action lasting for 10-12 hours.
Short-term treatment and maintenance therapy for active duodenal ulcer.
Treatment of pathological hypersecretory conditions, eg Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and multiple endocrine adenomas.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION :
Treatment of Ulcer:
Acute : One 40 mg caplet once daily before bedtime or 0ne 20 mg caplet, twice daily, for 4 weeks. Longer treatment of
> 6-8 weeks is rarely required.
As Maintenance Therapy :
One 20 mg caplet once daily before bedtime.
Hypersecretory Conditions :
One 20 mg caplet every 6 hours. Dosage can be increased to individual requirement.
Patients hypersensitive to famotidine.
Caution should be taken when given to patients with liver dysfunction. Reduce dosage in patients with renal impairment.
Exclude gastric maglinancy before treatment with famotidine.
Use in pregnancy : Safe use and lactation has not been established.
Use in children : Safe use and efficacy in children have not established.
SIDE EFFECTS :
Sometimes fever, swollen eyelid due to allergic reaction, bleeding or bruises, increased heart rate and fatigue. Headache ,
dizziness, constipation, diarrhea, thrombocytopenia and arthralgia have been also reported.
Concurrent administration of famotidine with drugs metabolised through microsomal liver enzyme, eg cytochrome P-450 (eg
theophylline, warfarin, diazepam) does not significantly interfere with the metabolism of those drugs.
