PYRICEF
Capsule & Syrup
COMPOSITIONS  :
Each capsule of Pyricef–500 contains cefadroxil monohydrate equivalent to 500 mg of cefadroxil anhydrate.
Every 5 ml (teaspoon) of Pyricef syrup (dissolved) contains cefadroxil monohydrate equivalent to 125 mg of cefadroxil
anhydrate.

PHARMACOLOGY  :
In vitro tests demonstrate that the cephalosporins are bactericidal because of their inhibition of cell wall synthesis.
Pyricef is rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Over 90 % of the drug is excreted unchanged in the urine within 24 hours.
Pyricef is active against the following organisms in vitro. 
Gram Positive  : 
Beta hemolytic streptococci.
Staphylococci, including penicillinase – producing strains.
Streptococcus pneumoniae.
Streptococcus phyogenes.
Gram Negative  :
Escherichia coli.
Klebsiella pneumonia.
Proteus mirabili.
Haemophyllus  influenzae.

Note  : Most strains of Enterococci (streptococcus faecalis and S.faecium) are resistant to Pyricef. It is not active against most
strains of Enterobacter sp,  P. morganii and P. vulgaris. It has no activity against Pseudomonas sp and Acinetobacter
calcoaceticus (Formerly Mima and Herellea spp).

INDICATIONS  :
Infections due to susceptible microorganisms, eg upper and lower respiratory infections, skin and soft tissue infections,
genitourinary tract infections, other infections : Osteomyelitis and septic arthritis.

DOSAGE  &  ADMINISTRATION :
Pyricef is acid – stable and may be administered orally without regard to meals.
Adults  :  Urinary tract infections  : for uncomplicated lower urinary tract infection (ie, cystitis), the usual dosage is 1 – 2
g / day in single or divided doses (2 times a day).
Upper and Lower Respiratory Tract Infections : For mild infections the usual dosage is 1 g / day in 2 divided doses (500
mg 2 times a day).
Children  : Recommended Daily Dose : 25 – 50 mg / kg / day in divided doses (every 12 hrs) as indicated.
In patients with renal impairment, the dosage of Pyricef should be adjusted according to creatinine clearance rates to
prevent drug accumulation.
In the treatment of beta hemolytic streptococcal infections, a therapeutic dosage of Pyricef should be administered for
at least 10 days.

How to dissolve dry syrup
Shake the bottle to loosen the powder. Add 38 ml of water to the bottle (or until touching the arrow mark), invert and shake.
Shake well before using, keep container tightly closed. The syrup should not be used more than 7 days after it is being
dissolved.

CONTRA INDICATIONS  :
Patients hypersensitive to the cephalosporins.

PRECAUTIONS  :
Any patient who has demonstrated a history of some form of allergy, particularly to drugs, should receive antibiotics cautiously
and then only when absolutely necessary. If a hypersensitivity reaction  occurs, the drug should be discontinued and the
patient treated with the usual agents (eg, epinephrine or other pressor  amines, antihistamines or corticosteroids).
Prolonged use of cefadroxil may result in the overgrowth of  non-susceptible organisms.
There are no adequate and well – controlled studies in pregnant women. This drug should be used during pregnancy only if
clearly needed. Caution should be exercised when cefadroxil is administered to a nursing mother.

SIDE  EFFECTS  :
Symptoms of pseudo membranous colitis can appear during antibiotic treatment. Nausea and vomiting have rarely been
reported. Administration with food decreases nausea but does not decrease absorption.
Other reactions have included genital pruritus, genital moniliasis, vaginitis, moderate transient neutropenia and minor
elevations in serum transaminase.

Store in a cool (15 – 300 c ) and dry place.
