Each caplet contains Ampicillin trihydrate equivalent to Ampicillin anhydrate 500 mg.
Ampicillin is a broad – spectrum antibiotic with a bactericidal effect. Besides its effect against gram – positive bacteria which is
similar to penicillin G, ampicillin also proves to be effective against gram – negative microorganisms. Mechanism of action is by
inhibiting the formation of mucopolypeptide which is necessary for the synthesis of the cell wall of bacteria.
Infections of the gastrointestinal tract and chronic bronchitis caused by Hemophilus influenza, Staphyllococcus (which is
hypersensitive to Penicillin G) Streptococcus pnemoniae, Shigella, Salmonella (including Salmonella typhosa).
Infections of the urinary tract caused by Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Enterococcus and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (in
women). Urethritis caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
Infection of the ears : Otitis media.
Septicaemia caused by gram – positive and gram – negative microorganisms.
Adults and children with body weight > 20 kg : 250 – 500 mg 4 times daily.
Children with body weight < 20 kg : 50 – 100 mg / kg body weight in 4 divided doses.
Urethritis caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae for adults : 2 grams to be administered concomitantly with 1 gram of

Long – term and high dose therapy can cause superinfection (usually by Pseudomonas, Enterobacter, Candida)
especially in the gastrointestinal tract.
ADVERSE REACTIONS :
Gastrointestinal : Nausea, Vomiting and diarrhea.
Hypersensitivity : Urticaria, dermatitis, fever, edema, erythema multiforme and sometimes exfoliative dermatitis.
Patients hypersensitive to Penicillin.
Keep in a cool and dry place
Probenecid impairs drug excretion
