ERABUTOL PLUS
Caplet
COMPOSITION  :
Each caplet contains :
Ethambutol   300 mg
INH                150 mg
Vitamin B6      10 mg

ACTIONS  :
Isoniazid is a very potent antituberculous drug. For the prevention of dose- dependent peripheral neuritis, which quite often
occurs in undernourished patients, vitamin B6 is added purposely in the 400-mg tablet.

PHARMACOLOGY :
Only 1-2 hrs after oral administration, isoniazid attains maximal serum concentrations and it has a half – life of 6 hrs or more
(depending on the acetylation rate). INH diffuses readily into body fluids, eg CSF, pleural exudate and ascitic fluid and it also
penetrates easily into the tissues, including necrotic tuberculous tissue. It is excreted chiefly via the kidneys.

INDICATIONS  :
All forms of pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis due to strains of tubercle bacilli.

DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION  :
1 tab every morning or evening before a meal.
INH should always be prescribed in combination with any other antituberculous drug, ie Rifampicin.

CONTRAINDICATIONS  :
Epilepsy, history of psychic troubles, renal insufficiency. Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to INH may be considered
only where special precautions can be observed.

PRECAUTIONS  :
In patients with impaired renal function and in those showing a tendency to convulsions, the tablet should be used with
particular caution. Ophthalmic examination should be done before INH is started and periodically thereafter. Caution should be
advised with daily use of alcohol, in diabetics and during pregnancy and lactation.

SIDE EFFECTS  :
Signs of hypersensitivity to INH which are rare, may take the form of fever, drug rash, jaundice or blood dyscrasias. Patients
may sometimes complain of dizziness, drowsiness, headache, dryness of the mouth or disorders of micturition.
Peripheral neuropathy and other neurotoxic effects, nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, metabolic and endocrine reactions,
rheumatic and systemic lupus erythematosus syndrome.
For the prevention of dose-dependent peripheral neuritis which quite often occurs in undernourished patients, small doses of
pyridoxine (vitamin B6) can be prescribed in addition. Psychoses, damage to the optic nerve and convulsions constitute rare
side effects.

INTERACTIONS  :
When employed together with diphenylhydantoin (phenytoin), INH causes an increase in the latter’s blood concentration ; if
necessary, the dosage of diphenylhydantoin should therefore be reduced.
It is not advisable to administer the tablet concomitantly with disulfiram.

STORAGE  :
Store in a cool and dry place.
